Sarcoptic Mange or Scabies in dogs

Scabies mange mite risks at Oak House Vets

Canine sarcoptic mange is a non-seasonal, highly itchy and contagious canine skin disease caused by infestation with the burrowing mite
Sarcoptes scabiei var canis.
The mite is transferable by direct contact, or indirectly to other species, including foxes and humans. The entire life cycle lasts for three weeks and is completed on one host.

Extreme itching and scratching is the most common sign that you would notice in your dog. We would need to make a definite diagnosis by demonstrating presence of the mite. It can only be seen under the microscope and deep skin scrapings would need to be taken.

Canine scabies treatments include topical dips and shampoos or use of Advocate drops that need to be used at four week intervals to eliminate all stages of the mite.

Sarcoptes can readily transfer from canine to human skin if there is close contact. Although mites from dogs can survive and burrow in human skin, they seem unable to breed on the abnormal host. Repeated close contact with the infested dog is necessary to maintain human infestation.
